The future of ebooks: will they or won't they?
But where Bullet was released through publisher Simon and Shuster for a flat per-download price of US$2.50, King had other plans for his tale of horticultural horror. Intrigued by the possibility of e-publishing becoming "Big Publishing’s worst nightmare," as he wrote on his Web site at the time of the release, King decided to go it alone with The Plant.
"People need to figure out the new technology and get comfortable with it before they’ll agree to pay out money for it," said Cook. "I think established writers can use (the ebook) to promote themselves and widen their audience. But the immediate benefit will be for new writers to establish an audience. As audiences become enamored with an author and their material, they’ll be more willing to pay for it."
"(Ebook technology) presents a phenomenal opportunity for keeping older books available – books that are out of print, that the authors have the rights to, or few copies exist in libraries – because of the reduced cost," he said.
"The issue of print and electronic publishing is not an either/or, it’s an additive thing."
