Library adding e-books, but publishers slow to catch on
The e-book revolution is upon us, and libraries if not publishers seem to be ready to embrace it.
But buying software or even a unit to read e-books could be a challenge at least until the industry establishes itself, ac-cording to Susan Mathews, coordinator of circulation and technical services at Mead Public Library.
A year ago, some e-book readers watched Gemstar, a subsidiary of RCA, acquire Rocket Ebooks, then the best-known of all e-readers. Their Rocket Ebooks became obsolete after Gemstar changed formats, because Gemstar's books are incompatible with Rocket.
The ongoing lack of interchangeability and lack of standardization are keeping e-books from taking off, Mathews said. There's also a great deal of resistance to reading off a device and not having a book.
It's only appropriate the best way to learn about e-books is by going to the Internet.
