E-books to face similar piracy issues as Napster
The e-books market stands to feel the loss of revenue as a result of a similar file-swapping piracy that has plagued the music industry via Napster, according to a study by monitoring company Envisional.
The study found about 7,300 copyrighted titles available for free via file-sharing networks like Gnutella. Currently, there are over 700 individual copies of the popular children’s ‘Harry Potter’ books online. Yet, this is a “relatively conservative estimate of the number of illegal books out there," said the monitoring company.
Most piracy happens when users scan books onto their PC.
