Electronic Braille formats for the use of blind people
A new literary resource on the internet that allows surfers to share books has taken advantage of a legal loophole ensuring that it won't go the same way as the ill-fated music-sharing company, Napster.
Bookshare, which launched in February, is building an online library of books scanned into audio and electronic Braille formats for the use of blind people and those with reading disabilities. A special exemption from copyright law allows the company to offer books that are still officially in copyright.
Although around 3,000 out-of-copyright titles can be accessed by everyone, the remainder will be kept on a secure server which will only be available to those who can prove they have a reading disability. complete article
