Digital (Fill in the Blank) Is on the Horizon
Nancy Savoy does not share the rapture of her technophile husband, Tom, when he starts talking about hardware and software, kilobits and megabytes.
"My eyes glaze over," she said. "I'm not nerdy."
But Ms. Savoy, whose life is already surrounded by many of the amenities of modern technology — a personal computer, high-speed Internet access, a cellphone, a digital camera and a DVD player — did not hesitate when she was approached recently about joining a pilot program for digital home technology.
Hers will be one of 20 families in the Boston area that will soon try out networked appliances, including next-generation ovens, which can both cook and refrigerate food and can be controlled remotely by using cellphones or personal computers.
