XML for Typesetters
XML can quite easily reproduce the way Quark and Word structure text, capturing only paragraph-like entities and character ranges within them. HTML, with a few exceptions (e.g. lists and block quotations) thinks about text precisely this way, in fact. (The Open eBook Publication Structure’s current version does as well, unfortunately, although future versions will be much more flexible.) However, this isn’t really how XML is intended to be used. ...Typesetters should experiment with XML for themselves. All it takes is a text editor, a parser/validator (free ones are available, including web-based validators) and a lot of patience. Fortunately, typesetters are marvelously patient people, and their long experience with texts will serve them well as they move into structured markup.
