Pocket PC eBooks Watch - eBook and beyond
Chris De Herrera's ebooks links is one of the best. And he just updated his site this week. Please take a look at ebooks link collection or Reader eBooks Directory Try the first chapter free from CyclopsMedia.com. The catalog is growing and ALL of the eBooks can be read on Pocket PC. The first chapter of ANY eBook is free, and each eBook costs $5.95 which is reasonable. Battle of the Books: the ebook vs. the antibook by Eric Eldred. Nice discussion in FAQ format regarding the legal issue and revolution of ebooks The Mormon LDS Standard Works in Microsoft Reader e-book format by Yanceyware who have compiled the five books of the Standard Works into a single e-book. This e-book takes slightly longer to load, however, once loaded, it is much faster to navigate between the individual books of scripture. The individual e-books are still available for those of you who prefer to keep them separate. My friend, who works for Microsoft, told me that he has access to Microsoft ebooks library that compatible with both desktop/laptop and pocketpc. Books inside the library include most major current books in the store, and since they are compatible with pocketpc. He suspects Microsoft paid for bulk license for its employees. Feedbacks, such as what ebooks are most downloadable or the newest book listed are welcome. Email me to jsjm6@cbn.net.id Just found this in Brighthand's Ipaq Discussion forum: "Well, after a successful flash update, I notice a new, really ANNOYING "feature" with Reader. Before, if I was reading a book, I could turn the Ipaq off, turn it back on, and be at the page I left off. Now, when I turn the Ipaq back on, the page flashes on the screen, then poofs to the Reader library. I have to click on the book, and hit the recent page button, which now seems to take 1-2 MINUTES sometimes to get me back to the right page. This is a SERIOUS flaw. I've seen this on a friends IPAQ as well." And another reader also comfirm this problem, while some other did not experience this. Read a reader's experience in purchasing MS Reader e-book that used extra protection that required user to activate the name before reading the ebooks. This type of MS Reader ebook is not compatible for pocket pc, usually it stated in BN as "for laptop and desktop only" . Some of the hightlights are: "The first order of business was to download and install the Microsoft Reader. Afterward, the instructions told me I needed to "activate" the reader to access premium content. This required creating a Microsoft Passport account. Nowhere do the instructions provide an explanation as to why I need a Microsoft Passport account, but I went along, spending several dissatisfying minutes filling out forms on passport.com. When asked to set up an e-wallet, I decided against it because I really didn't have much information about passport.com and I wasn't comfortable storing my credit card information online with Microsoft." For complete articles click here. "Although Adobe unveiled plenty of flashy new features in its latest version of the Adobe reader, it did not make the product compatible with the handheld-style e-book readers currently flooding the market" AllNetDevices. Jason's Pocket PC Thoughts has nice article about the agreement between BN.Com and Adobe on ebooks. Visit his website to read his analysis on the news. Ansyr’s Primer 2.3 review by Microsoft: Primer, and PDF files in general, do not support repagination; that is, they will not automatically adjust the width of a document to fit on a display screen. Therefore, Primer works best with documents that have large text sizes or are formatted with multiple columns. When you compiled ebook with ReaderWork, remember that by combining several html will make FIND command in Pocket PC Reader to search only within that chapter . It will not search the whole book. This is not happen with Desktop version. As a result when created ebook for pocket PC, it is better that you combine all chapters into one html file (+html for Table of Contents) before converting to .lit. There are other newsgroup that discussed about ebook. Unanswered question of this month? Why Adobe Corp. did not provide pdf viewer for Pocket PC? Stupid as stupid does, they will loose share to MS Reader in this case. And Pocket PC users need to buy Primer for $49 to read PDF file. Anyone who knows somebody in Adobe, should advice them to give away reader for free for Pocket PC. NewYorker, one of the best magazine in the world wil publish its ebooks in MS Reader format; And BN.com will sell its ebooks in MS Reader format this week. I just hope the format will be compatible for PocketPC Reader. Some of my favorite sites that are good for .lit conversion (I just hope these sites someday will offer automatic .lit conversion like My Slate): Let your Pocket PC's MS Reader to become the personal internet library during long trips or vacation. I often copy the excellent web content into MS Word and convert it to .lit format, for later reading in car and airplane. The advantage of using MS Reader compared to Pocket IE or .Doc file is the ability of bookmarking and Table of Contents. The 'endless scrolling' bugs from Pocket PC MS Reader has been fixed, especially for iPAQ owner through the ROM Flash Upgrade. But don't clap your hand first; Compaq had been taken off the upgrade patch due to lots of iPAQ users failed miserably in updating their PDA. I will post any new information regarding this fix to MS Reader in the future. For those of you who love the ClearType fonts enhancement, you can now read the Avantgo and IE in cleartype fonts. You can download the utility free from Handango or by click here. I installed it in my iPAQ and I like reading the long articles from New York Times just like reading e-Books from MS Reader. For those who is looking e-Bible, e-Book of Mormon, Budhism and e-Koran (English translatrion) and other faiths for pocket pc you can download from Religion section of Blackmask. To see Black Mask's new ebooks every day check out its new book section and since most of the ebboks publish are not in MS Reader format you need to use Edit Find (^F or Ctrl-F) form your browser "MS Reader." Then you will see all the new MS Reader books posted in Black Mask. There are lots of famous ebooks posted in alt.binaries.e-book recently (I mean really-really famous), but they are in html and text format. Remember to use readerworks to convert html to .lit. And also if there is text file with carriage return on every line used my method posted last month to change it to paragraph type. If you see the file extention is .rar you need winrar to extract it. Jason's Pocket PC Thoughts also regularly give reports on e-books, like recently he reports some new commercial ebooks from Barnes and Noble that compatible with MS Reader for Pocket PC. His homepage is http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/. To read palm document e-book download peanutpress reader. I found this from ESSP: Top 5 E-Books site for January 2001: Slate just publish its second free e-book: The Road to Chadville: Campaign 2000 as Seen From Cyberspace by Jacob Weisberg. The book is very interesting and funny, it is about the US Election from the primary untill Gore's concession speech. Well I just found one very busy alt.binaries again: news:alt.binaries.e-book Some of the contents are supposedly not to be posted, but you will find some surprises over there. The newsgroup FAQ available in http://kickme.to/ebookfaq . This FAQ also included some surprises information, such as readers technology, links and off course FAQ.
