Germstar
Active Gemstar Publishers: The Future of Gemstar's Format
by John Landahl, InfoStrategist.com
A recent post in the eBookWeb Main Forum expressed concern about the future of the Gemstar reading devices from a reader's standpoint, drawing attention to a June 25, 2002, BleedingEdge.com article by Charles Wright entitled "Electronic Books Lose the Plot." Mr. Wright goes on to point out that these ePublishers contributed to their own failure by adopting what might be termed a "hard cover pricing model" as opposed to a "paperback pricing model," he also states that a decline in demand for the RCA 1100 "...influenced publishers to stop formatting their content for the device."
This last statement raised questions in my mind because, as an independent ePublisher specializing in Gemstar eBooks, I know that Gemstar requires that each title submitted to them for distribution be provided in RCA 1100 (.rb) format as well as RCA 1200 format (Open eBook Standard or OEB format). Thus, unless Gemstar changes its policy, for a publisher to drop support for the RCA 1100 format would mean ceasing to publish Gemstar eBooks entirely.
