Say it loud, "IOWA"
Who Needs Paper? Not Iowa College
Students at an Iowa college can forget the quintessential experience of pulling all-nighters at the library poring over stacks of books.
For one thing, there's no library. For another, there are no books.
The Des Moines Area Community College's West Des Moines campus is the newest of the college's six branches. It opened last fall with the mission to collaborate with companies to beta test education technologies.
Instead of a library, the school has a resource center equipped with computer workstations that can access the Web, e-books and online journals. The resource center also houses several meeting tables, audio-visual materials and a few paper magazines -- but no books.
West campus handheld initiative
The DMACC West Campus and Synerg.e™ Center will be one of the first educational institutions in the country to fully utilize handheld computer technology for delivery of course content and materials including texts and syllabi, wireless student interaction through e-mail and web surfing, notification of news and upcoming events, course and competencies assessment, and for general daily planning.
Why use handheld computer technology in a college environment?
As technology changes and people become more and more accustomed to using these changes in everyday life, educational institutions must shift classroom delivery methods in order to adapt to them. Handheld computer technology provides a number of features and benefits that have already proven themselves in both business and everyday life:
Mobility (On-the-go, 24/7 access)
Simplicity (Ease of use and understanding)
Versatility (Able to meet a variety of changing needs)
Functionality (Perform an assortment of activities simultaneously)
Organization (Keeps schedules, tasks, e-mails, documents and other forms of information consolidated and coordinated)
Low Cost (Extremely cost-effective relative to other forms of computer technology)
These reasons, and many others, were the basis for our decision to "reengineer" how we provide learning in our new environment. Des Moines Area Community College has always been in the forefront of technical education. The new West Campus and Synerg.e™ Center not only speak to this history, but also show our commitment to students at all levels by providing a technically advanced, robust environment for learning.
The DMACC West Campus and Synerg.e™ Center are committed to take students through the steps necessary for a successful learning experience - from building awareness and acquiring skills to applying the new knowledge in business. The information used to achieve this will be delivered in a new and compelling manner, one that more and more people are beginning to demand…learning and everything you need, right in the palm or your hand! (or in the pc from your pocket)
