Using data to get closer to the customer
There's no better industry to illustrate the transformation of production processes than publishing.
The core business remains essentially unchanged. We write articles we believe people will read. If we succeed we attract advertisers, sell copies and grow in influence.
Improvements to the physical process are subject to the law of diminishing returns. Traditional print publishing specialist software and hardware from the likes of Apple and Adobe still makes some gains, but the really big changes have been and gone.
But publishing is no longer simply about print. You might be reading this online, in a weekly e-book, as an HTML newsletter or in the newspaper.
Technology is concentrated on the delivery mechanism. It's also strongly focused on data. To be more specific, our fortunes rest on the quality of information we can glean from the ocean of data we receive every day in our various publishing operations around the world.
