is your new iPod Photo Defected?
iPod 4G Audio Defect: The Details and Test
this test apply to new iPod Photo too
What is the Audio Defect: "Users of affected iPods will be able to hear a hard disk-like whirring sound in their earphones, coupled with several seconds of light static at the start of a song that has just been loaded. This should not be confused with the quiet hard disk loading sounds that an iPod makes, which sounds are not audible through earphones, or with normal static-like compression artifacts in your audio."
How can you test a 4G iPod for the Audio Defect...

iTunes and iPod Photo: Frequently asked questions about Photo Sync
How much hard drive space do I need to sync my photos?
You need to have about as much free space on your hard drive as the size of your collection of photos. iTunes constructs a photo database on your hard drive in order to make photo syncing fast when you add new photos in the future.
Can I sync my photos to my iPod Photo manually?
You can't drag individual photos or groups of photos to the iPod Photo like you can with music files in iTunes.
Can I sync photos from multiple computers or user accounts to one iPod Photo?
No, you can only sync from one computer or user account.
What does it mean when "Optimizing for iPod" appears in iTunes and what happens if I cancel?
iTunes creates TV-quality versions of your photos and stores them in a database on your computer. This makes it much faster when you add new photos to your iPod later.

Porn Is Going Mobile
Pornography may be the thing that turns cell phones into cheap, fast content-delivery systems. But porn fans want more from their mobile adult content -- and size ain't the only thing that matters.
Apple's new photo iPod -- which one Slashdot wag dubs the iPorn -- maxes out at 25,000 pictures or 15,000 songs. It's a triple-X theater in your pocket, even if it's only for slide shows. But you know video is next, along with image capture. The iPod already has a microphone attachment that enables you to record audio. (I use it to record the bad country songs I compose in my spare time.)

Limited Snip
Snipper
"Ever wish you could read news from major news sites like cnn.com on a Pocket PC device with the web page formatted specifically for a PDA? Most major news web sites do not offer their content to be easily viewed on mobile devices. The web pages include large graphics, ads, several columns, java script, and many other things. It isn't practical to view such web sites on a Pocket PC. Snipper is the first application available that makes it possible to view 3 of the Internet's most popular news web sites: CNN.com, MSNBC.com and the Jerusalem Post (jpost.com). Snipper retrieves the front page of these news sites without any graphics. It then extracts the various sections and recreates a web page that is optimally viewed on a PDA."

NEW!
iPod Photo
The newest member of the iPod family, iPod Photo comes in two sizes: a 40GB model, available for $499, and a capacious 60GB model that sells for $599. Both feature a razor sharp LCD display that lets you see your photos in vivid color — 65,536 colors, to be exact. And with its built-in backlighting, you’ll be able to admire those photos indoors or out.
Wondering how you’re going to get all your digital photographs into iPod Photo? iTunes 4.7. The new version lets you import your images directly into iPod Photo from a folder on the hard drive of your Mac or PC. Spent time organizing your photos using iPhoto on a Mac or either Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 on a PC? iTunes 4.7 rewards your diligence by importing the albums you’ve created in iPhoto or collections created in Album or Elements. You’ll be able to choose them from the Photos menu on iPod Photo.

Happy Birthday iPod
This is the first message from Steve Jobs, 3 years ago in introducing the iPod:
October 23, 2001—Apple® today introduced iPod™, a breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket. iPod combines a major advance in portable music device design with Apple’s legendary ease of use and Auto-Sync, which automatically downloads all your iTunes™ songs and playlists into your iPod, and keeps them up to date whenever you plug your iPod into your Mac®.
“With iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that lets you put your entire music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again.”

Belated Thoughts
Regarding: PalmGear Acquires Palm Digital Media In Deal With PalmSource
Got email from my friend, who used to work for Palm Digital Media, telling me that my thought of thinking Palmgear is one of the sister company of Palm was wrong.
Here is the email (edited)
"PalmGear isn't a sister company of PalmSource -- PalmGear is owned by a bunch of 'people' that decided to close down our office. :-)
They are "associated" with palmOne and PalmSource in that they do business related to Palm OS handhelds, and they licensed the use of the word "palm" in their web site. other than that, they aren't tied to palmOne."

I just hope that they don't do any changes to the winning DRM formula that the Peanut Press Founders had invented.

Mission Impossible
Self-destructing DVDs to help market new film
A little-known Atlanta company hopes to change Hollywood's thinking about movie distribution with a novel marketing plan that includes using relatively new disposable DVDs, the company said on Monday.
At the center of the Convex Group's plan is a low budget Christmas movie called "Noel," directed by Chazz Palminteri, that will debut in up to 10 U.S. cities on Nov. 12. On the same day, the disposable DVD can be bought for $4.99 through online retailer Amazon.com.
A little over two weeks later, the movie will air once on cable television network TNT, which Convex hopes will only spur greater ticket sales and higher revenues from the DVDs, which become unplayable 48 hours after their air-tight package is opened.

Most students at Cranbury School no longer have to lug their math books home every night, thanks to a new program that gives third-, fourth- and fifth-graders CD-ROMs to work from and upper level students Web-based textbooks to supplement regular paper-based books.
Students in grades three through five are using the new Houghton Mifflin Mathematics program that includes both traditional texts and eBooks to be used on home or school computers.
Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are now using Impact, a math curriculum developed by Glencoe, a mathematics textbook company, that gives students passwords to access their textbook and supplemental material via the Internet.

Convergence mania
Is gadget convergence going too far?
Electronics have found their way into the daily lives of millions of people, many of whom can't imagine life without their beloved gadgets. Manufacturers now offer devices with any combination of cell phone, camera, movie player, PDA and MP3 player functionality. But with these sophisticated devices come complexity, confusion and a demand for power that regular batteries can't keep up with. Early adopters are eager to buy the latest streamlined devices. But many others are now ditching their ultra-converged gadgets and relying on separate devices with simpler functionality. Are gadgets getting too complicated for the average user?

Music album to be sold on memory card
Singer Robbie Williams' greatest-hits album arrives in music stores Tuesday, as well as some phone shops, marking a first for the United Kingdom: It will be released, pre-loaded, on a mobile memory card.
The album will feature video content as well as a "CD-quality" version of the album.
While the mobile format will doubtless become popular with teenagers, its pricing may cause some parents a few grumbles. While a CD copy will cost about $16.22 (8.99 pounds) from online outlets, the preloaded card will cost about $54.13.

I want to break free
No-guilt downloads: free books, music and movies
"Information wants to be free," new-media gadfly Stewart Brand exclaimed famously in 1984. Brand has yet to start giving away his own books online, but others have, in the belief that word-of-mouth marketing will yield a bigger payoff in the long run.
A few brave musicians similarly post free copies of their albums online and allow people to record and distribute their concerts for free. In most cases, the creators retain copyright to the books or recordings, but they permit fans to make copies for their own use.
Many other works – books, music and films – are in the public domain. This means that you can download them, upload them, package and even sell them.
The Internet Archive pulls together several long-standing, independent electronic book libraries, including the Million Book Project and Project Gutenberg, which account for more than 20,000 free books between them. Ibiblio.org's Ebooks collection features, among other things, technical and historical works, and the Digital Book Index lists 90,000 titles, of which more than 50,000 are free.

It's No Pod
Toshiba Gigabeat F 60GB
There comes a time when you must get fed up of other people taking all the credit for your hard work, and it seems that time has come for Toshiba with the announcement that its latest hard drive - a whopping 60GB model won't be destined for the iPod has we had all predicted, but instead be saved for its own MP3 player range - the Gigabeat, writes Stuart Miles.
Compact and weighty, the Gigabeat is roughly the same size as the iPod 40GB model. However, that's where the similarities stop. The front is adorned with a large 2.2in QVGA 240 x 320 colour screen that is crisp and clear, and a sliding control cross mechanism - a mix of the clickwheel from the iPod and the slider from Creative's Zen Touch.

Week in review: All eyes on iPod
The various versions of the iPod account for 92.1 percent of the market for hard-drive-based music players, up from 82.2 percent a year ago. And Apple is profiting from that dominance, as fourth-quarter revenue from iPods more than quadrupled to $537 million, accounting for 23 percent of Apple's total revenue.
Those numbers are music to the ears of competitors, which have introduced a barrage of products, in roughly the same price range, to tackle the market-leading iPod.

iPod Micro
Apple Computer's rumored 'iPod micro' could be used to boost Mac market share
First off, this new iPod will be impossibly thin, light and inexpensive. Think of a couple of credit cards stuck together and that's about the size of it. With a suggested retail price of around US$99, the new 'iPod micro' could be designed to be a value-added offering from Apple, included with any new Macintosh (eMac, iMac, iBook, PowerBook, Power Mac, and heck even Xserve) purchase. It would be a more direct way to concentrate the iPod Halo Effect upon the masses (see related articles below).
What would giving away this incredibly thin, tiny iPod accomplish for Apple? Well, for one thing, it could help sell more Macs which would be a good thing. It'd be $99 to buy it on its own, but "free" with a new Mac, so why wait for 'Longhorn' when Tiger's on the prowl and you get an iPod to boot?

Podcasting for Dummies
J-Walk Blog: Podcasting And Music
John, at the Inlument blog, writes: DailySourceCode Drives iTunes Purchase.
"Today, I had the day off, so I played with iPodder, and set it up to download Adam Curry's DailySourceCode Podcast. Podcasting is cool. It's like talk radio without the radio...
So, I listened to it while I was out mowing the lawn, and at about 6:57 into the daily podcast, Adam played Frank Sinatra's Come Fly with Me. What a fantastic song.
So, I immediately went into the house, brought up the iTunes Music Store and bought the track... and then I went ahead and bought the entire album that I found it on... seemed like a prudent thing to do at the time."
I wonder if Adam Curry obtained permission to use that music for his podcast? Will podcasters be the next target for RIAA law suits?

the Verdict:
MSN Music Falls Just Short of iTunes' High Marks
Purchasing a song requires providing a credit card number and setting up a user account on Microsoft's Passport identity service. Not seeing any clear reason why my Hotmail password (that Web-mail service also requires a Passport login) should unlock my credit card, I set up a different Passport account for this store.
But the comparison was much tougher when I auditioned versions of Miles Davis's "So What" purchased off iTunes and MSN Music. In repeated listening, I couldn't pick a clear winner -- although, when played over good speakers, both lacked a tiny bit of the original CD version's depth.
I won't knock MSN for not being iPod-compatible; Apple has chosen not to support other stores' download formats, and there's little Microsoft can do about it. But I will knock MSN Music for not offering the elementary ability to print out CD covers, as iTunes does.
You can also play downloads in older versions of Windows Media Player, but you lose some usage rights -- the seven-burn limit is absolute, not a minimum, and applies to tracks instead of playlists.

Flash 101
How Flash Memory Works
Flash memory is a type of EEPROM chip. It has a grid of columns and rows with a cell that has two transistors at each intersection (see image at the site).
The two transistors are separated from each other by a thin oxide layer. One of the transistors is known as a floating gate, and the other one is the control gate. The floating gate's only link to the row, or wordline, is through the control gate. As long as this link is in place, the cell has a value of 1. To change the value to a 0 requires a curious process called Fowler-Nordheim tunneling.

You Stole my Alphabets
Name That Note
Is it stealing to copy half a measure from a 1970s funk record? If the intellectual-property hawks have their way, yes.
The stories sound like urban legends, only they're true: A judge halts the distribution of a Bruce Willis movie because one scene resembles a drawing by an avant-garde architect. The Beastie Boys are sued for using a six-second snippet of an obscure flute recording--even though they got a release from the record company beforehand. And, most recently, a federal appeals court holds a film studio liable for a soundtrack tune that includes a three-note guitar lick from a recording by 1970s funkster George Clinton.
What's next, copyrighting a single note? We're almost there. In a digital world, where entire songs and movies can be composed from bits and pieces of other media, lawyers are working overtime to protect what their clients see as the right to be paid for every scrap of intellectual property.
